Bible and Bed

As the day winds down and the world outside begins to quiet, there’s a practice that has become a cherished part of my evening routine: spending a few moments with God’s Word before I close my eyes for sleep. It’s a simple habit, really, but one that has brought immeasurable peace and perspective into my life.

Life can be busy, filled with demands and distractions from morning till night. Our minds can race with worries about tomorrow, regrets about today, or simply the endless noise of the world. Bringing the Bible into those final moments before rest feels like an anchor in a stormy sea.

There’s something profoundly calming about reading scripture when the house is still and the day’s work is done. It’s a time to intentionally shift my focus from the temporal to the eternal, from the anxieties of this world to the promises of God. It’s a chance to quiet the internal chatter and listen for His voice.

I find that reading even just a few verses can reframe my thoughts. If I’m feeling anxious, I might turn to passages about God’s provision and care, like Matthew 6:33-34, which reminds us not to worry about tomorrow. If I’m feeling grateful, I might read a Psalm of thanksgiving. If I’m seeking wisdom, Proverbs offers timeless insights.

It’s not about rushing through chapters or feeling pressured to understand everything perfectly. It’s about connecting with the Author of life, allowing His truth to wash over me before sleep. It’s like taking a spiritual deep breath.

Furthermore, I believe that filling my mind with God’s truth before sleep helps to guard my thoughts during the night. Instead of dwelling on worries or negative thoughts, I can rest in the assurance of His love and sovereignty. Psalm 4:8 says, “In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” This verse truly resonates with me when I make time for the Bible before bed.

This practice isn’t a magic cure for all sleepless nights, but it certainly prepares my heart and mind for rest in a way that nothing else can. It’s a reminder that God is with me, even in the quiet hours of the night, and that His Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105), guiding me even as I prepare to rest.

So, if you’re looking for a way to bring more peace and spiritual grounding to your evenings, I highly encourage you to try the simple habit of “Bible and Bed.” You might be surprised at the quiet strength and comfort it brings.

A Bedtime Prayer

Heavenly Father,

As I come to the end of this day, I thank You for the gift of Your Word. Thank You for the truth and comfort I have found in these pages tonight.

Quiet my mind and my heart, Lord. Help me to release the worries and busyness of the day into Your loving hands. As I lie down to sleep, I pray for Your peace to fill this room and my soul.

Thank You for Your presence with me always, in the light of day and in the stillness of the night. Guard my thoughts and my dreams, and grant me restful sleep.

May I wake refreshed and ready to live for You tomorrow.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.”
